Description

Longford Mill is a watermill that was built in 1857 and converted into a house in 1972. The building is constructed of red brick with brick and stone detailing, topped with plain tile roofs that have overhanging eaves and brick gable stacks on the rear pitch. It stands two storeys high, with attics, and features a lower two-storey wing to the west. The main façade has three bays, plus a single bay wing to the west.

The central entrance has a basket-headed doorcase with a 20th-century stable door. Flanking the entrance are two storeyed, four-centred arched blind niches, each containing 3-light basket-headed casements on the ground floor, which have moulded brick sills and diamond leaded lights. Above these are two similar windows and a central 20th-century glazing bar fixed light under a basket-headed arch. At the top centre of the building is an inset stone datestone inscribed 'HG 1857' and a hoist platform supported by scrolled cast iron brackets, surrounded by plain railings.

The gabled attic dormer features a pendant, and below it are double plank doors. The lower section attached to the west has a central 3-light basket-headed diamond leaded light casement, with a small hayloft opening above that has a plank door and basket arch. At the front of the mill, below ground level, there is a brick retaining wall with a small segmental arch to the west for water to flow under the mill, and a larger segmental arch to the east. An iron wheel, which has been removed from the interior, is now positioned against the east gable wall of the mill.

The interior no longer contains any machinery. The rear of the mill features the original sluice gate on the west side, and there is a stone retaining wall for the mill pond that extends west to a stone weir. To the east side of the weir is a sluice gate with a separate channel.
