Description
Longford Cheese Factory is a cheese factory that has been converted into a workshop and store. It was built in 1870 with extensive later additions by a group of landowners from Derbyshire, guided by Cornelius Schermanhorn, an American cheesemaker. The building features weatherboarded timber framing, red brick additions, and slate roofs with overhanging eaves. It is a single-storey structure with four bays and brick additions at the rear and on the east side.
The north elevation has a raised brick platform with steel girders supporting a weatherboarded canopy. At the west end of the canopy is a metal plaque that reads, "The first cheese factory built in England, opened May 4th 1870, under the management of Cornelius Schermanhorn." Behind the canopy, there are central double wooden sliding doors and a plank door to the west. The east end features another large wooden sliding door.
To the east, there is a later brick addition with a fixed glazed window, while all other sides of the building are blank. The interior has mostly been altered. The factory is listed for its historical significance as the first purpose-built cheese factory in Britain.
