Description
The Churchyard Cross is a historic structure dating from the 10th century or earlier, located in the parish of Brailsford on Church Lane. It features a sandstone shaft that is set on a modern base, while the original base, which is square in shape and significantly weathered, stands on a stone slab to the side. The modern base includes inscriptions noting that the shaft was discovered beneath the original base in 1919 and was erected on the new base that same year. The shaft is incomplete and tapers, transitioning from a circular shape to a square, and it is intricately carved with figure scenes and interlace, reminiscent of notable northern examples like the Gosforth Cross in Cumbria.
