Description

Newton Old Hall is a house dating from the mid-17th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed from coursed squared sandstone, featuring ashlar dressings and quoins. The stone slate roof has two twin-flued, corniced ridge stacks from the 19th century and a corniced end stack on the left gable. The roof is hipped to the right and has a stone-coped gable on the left. The front of the house has flush parapets topped with flat copings and numerous ball finials.

The building is two stories high, plus attics, and consists of three bays. There is a deep plinth at the sill level. The south front features a central quoined, chamfered doorcase with a 20th-century studded door, flanked by pairs of four-light recessed and chamfered mullion windows with dripmoulds that extend continuously over the central windows and door. Above, there is a central five-light recessed and chamfered mullion window with a dripmould, flanked by similar four-light windows. Many of the mullions have been replaced, and all the fenestration features 20th-century leaded lights.

To the left, the street elevation has double gables with a central quoined, chamfered doorcase, flanked by recessed and chamfered mullion windows, with similar windows above. Inside, there are chamfered ceiling beams and an early 18th-century panelled door with L-hinges in the left-hand room.
