Description

The Former Co-Operative Village Stores and numbers 1-5, including the attached and associated back yard walls, is a building located in New Bolsover, constructed around 1891-1894, possibly by Brewill & Baily. Originally serving as village stores, it is now used for storage. The structure is made of red brick with some stone dressings and features plain tile hipped and gabled roofs, along with brick ridge stacks. It stands two storeys tall.

The west elevation consists of two symmetrical bays. The ground floor features a central round-arched doorway, which has a keystone and impost blocks but is now blocked with breeze blocks. Above the doorway is a decorative panel inscribed with the word 'Stores'. Flanking the doorway are recessed windows set in broad basket-arched openings, each with decorative keystones. The windows contain three main plate glass lights and a fixed overlight with small pane glazing. Above, there are two square oriel windows that rise into the gables, although these were boarded up at the time of re-survey.

To the right, there is a projecting wing with a timber-framed gable to the south that includes a shop window similar to the main elevation. To the north, there are four segment-headed windows, with one similar window centrally placed above and rising into a gable. There is also a further shop window to the left, beneath a timber-framed gable. The three cottages attached to the left feature casement windows and panelled doors. The walls at the rear enclose back yards. This building was constructed by the Bolsover Colliery Company as part of their 'Model Village' to accommodate the workforce.
