Description
The Former Miners Welfare, now known as The Sportsman, is a public house built around 1894 by Brewill & Baily. It features red brick and timber framing with blue brick dressings, topped by a plain tile roof with a brick ridge stack. The building is two storeys high and has a chamfered plinth.
The west elevation consists of three broad, irregular bays. The left bay has a decorative timber-framed gable. There is a square bay window, which was boarded up at the time of the survey. To the right, a flight of steps leads up to a lean-to porch entrance bay, which includes a square bay window with 2-5-2 lights, supported by two timber columns beneath an oversailing roof. A recessed porch is located to the left of this entrance.
Further to the right is a five-light casement window set under a recessed segmental arch, with a square oriel window above that rises to a gable in the roof. This oriel window features a 1-2-1-2-1 light arrangement, with the centre light lower and adorned with a decorative pediment. The timber-framed gable is also present here. The north elevation includes another bay window beneath a timber-framed gable, along with three additional windows.
