Numbers 83-97 Including The Attached And Associated Back Yard Walls

This is a terrace of eight colliery workers' cottages built around 1891-1894, possibly by Brewill & Bally. The cottages are made of red brick with some ashlar dressings and feature a Welsh slate roof with decorative ridge cresting and brick ridge stacks. They are two storeys high with attics. Notable architectural features include a decorative band on the first floor and a saw tooth eaves cornice. The cottages are arranged in symmetrical pairs, with each pair consisting of two 3-light casement windows set in ashlar surrounds, flanked by doorways that have ashlar lintels, panelled doors, and overlights. Above, there are two 2-light cross casements under stop-chamfered ashlar lintels, and the casements have small pane glazing. The cottages are attached to walls at the rear, which enclose back yards. These houses are part of the 'Model Village' created by the Bolsover Colliery Company to accommodate its workforce, following progressive Garden Suburb principles of planning and design.
