Numbers 115-129 Including The Attached And Associated Back Yard Walls

This is a terrace of eight colliery workers' cottages built around 1891-1894, possibly by Brewill & Baily. The cottages are made of red brick with some ashlar dressings and feature a Welsh slate roof with decorative ridge cresting. They are two storeys high with attics and have brick ridge stacks. A decorative band runs along the first floor, and the eaves cornice is saw-toothed. The cottages are designed as symmetrical pairs, with each pair featuring two 3-light casement windows in ashlar surrounds, flanked by doorways that have ashlar lintels, panelled doors, and overlights. Above these, there are two 2-light cross casements under stop-chamfered ashlar lintels, and the casements have small pane glazing. The walls at the back are attached to the cottages and enclose the back yards. These houses are part of the 'Model Village' created by the Bolsover Colliery Company to accommodate its workers, reflecting the progressive Garden Suburb principles of planning and design.
