Description
The South Wingfield Footpath Bridge is a narrow underbridge designed by George and Robert Stephenson, along with their Assistant Engineer Frederick Swanwick, for the North Midland Railway, built around 1836 to 1840. The bridge was later widened on the east elevation.
It is constructed from coursed squared Coal Measures sandstone, with ashlar gritstone dressings featuring tooled margins and red brick soffit linings. A riveted steel or iron deck has been added, supported by engineering brick abutments.
On the west elevation, there is a single semi-circular arch made of rusticated, ashlar V-jointed voussoirs that have tooled lower margins and a projecting keystone. The voussoirs continue as quoins to the soffit lining. The masonry abutments are gently sloped, and the spandrels are made from herringbone-patterned, punch-faced stonework. The bridge features a shallow parapet made of tooled ashlar blocks, which now supports 20th-century metal railings. The flanking walls are finished similarly to the abutment stonework and end at low, square masonry piers, with copings made of squared and tooled ashlar. The east elevation consists of a riveted iron or steel girder resting on blue engineering brick abutments, with flanking masonry walls extending on either side, following the alignment of the track bed that previously served as retaining walls for additional reception sidings, which have since been removed.
