Description
The stone arch at the southern entrance of the Milford Railway Tunnel was built in 1840 as part of the North Midland Railway, which was surveyed by George Stephenson. There is some evidence that the tunnel portals were designed by Francis Thompson. The arch features concentric stone semi-circular arches arranged in a decreasing series, similar to those at the northern entrance. When it was constructed, this tunnel was the longest railway tunnel in the country.
