Description
Sherbourne Mill is a disused water-powered corn mill located in the parish of Idridgehay and Alton. The building is constructed from coursed squared gritstone and red brick, topped with a plain tiled roof. It stands two storeys tall with an overloft, although a former extension to the southwest now only exists at the footings level. The mill features a former wheelpit in the southwest bay, where the wheel and drive machinery have been removed, but a pair of millstones remain in place. The openings for windows and doors are plain in design. A large curved buttress can be found on the north side of the mill. There is also a 19th-century red brick wing to the southeast, which has stone lintels over its plain openings. The mill originally sourced its water from the River Ecclesbourne through a long head race that is now overgrown and blocked.
