Description

The Post Office, originally a forge, and cottages at numbers 26 and 27 were built in 1848. They are constructed of coursed squared stone and feature a steeply pitched Collyweston stone slate roof with moulded stone ridge stacks. The building has a consciously picturesque appearance and is 1½ storeys high with a four-window range arranged in a 1-2-1 pattern.

At either end of the building are coped gabled projections with decorative kneelers. The left projection has a 4-centred arched entrance framed by a colossal carved horseshoe, along with a 2-light casement window and a blank shield above. The right projection features a 3-light mullioned and transomed window on the ground floor, complete with a hood mould shaped like a giant ribbon, and a 2-light casement window with a shield displaying the Exeter logo above.

The two projections are connected by an arcade of 4-centred arches, which steps up in the center to incorporate a datestone. The entrance to number 26 is located within two steeply-pitched gabled dormers above, while the entrance to number 27 is found within a one-storey gabled projection to the north. The north front includes a two-storey projection with a datestone, and the one-storey projection to the south has a massive stack at the rear, a plank door in a plain architrave, and a shuttered 2-light window.
