Description

Number 37, including adjoining outbuildings, is a group of combined buildings that form one house and outbuildings, which have been somewhat altered from their original layout. The buildings date from the late 17th century to the early 18th century, with a late 18th-century structure on the north side. They are two storeys tall, with the main building featuring a front made of chequered brick in red and blue, stone quoins, and a stone slate roof. It has a moulded wood eaves cornice and a stone band. There are four windows with hung sashes and flush frames. The ground floor has three modern bays and a modern door set in an original window opening. The south side of the building is constructed of coursed rubble and serves as stabling, complete with a loft and stable doors. The north side, dating from the late 18th century, is also made of coursed rubble with stone quoins and stone slates, topped with a separate roof that has a flatter pitch and lacks a cornice. A mid-19th-century door features a moulded wood doorcase with reeded pilaster strips and sham Doric capitals, a plain fanlight, and a small hood on brackets with moulded drop pendants. The interior has been significantly altered but retains a mid-18th-century staircase, with indications that the original door was centrally placed. This building is part of a group that includes the Market Cross, Stocks, Nos 35 and 37, and Nos 1 to 3 Church Passage.
