Description

No. 42 Main Street is a mid-19th century cottage, originally designed as a pair, by architect Henry Roberts. The building is constructed of red brick with stone quoins, a gable cornice, and stone dressings, topped with a Welsh slate roof featuring a brick and stone ornamental ridge stack. It stands two storeys high and has two gables, each with two 2-light casements, while below are two 3-light casements. On the left end, there is a 2-light window that was formerly a door, along with a 1-light window. On the right end, there is a door and a 1-light window. Additional 2-light casements are located on the end gables. Henry Roberts was known for his work in improving housing for the working class, and this cottage reflects one of his designs published for use by landowners and others.
