Description
Flores House is a medieval building, likely from the 13th or 14th century, that has been significantly altered and is now divided into two houses. The east front faces the street at a right angle and features a central section flanked by gabled wings on either end. The building is two stories tall with attics. The northern gabled wing has undergone considerable renovation and extends the frontage along High Street, showcasing a central gable and a modern oriel window. Constructed from coursed stone with a cement-rendered gable, the roofs are covered with tiles and slate.
The east elevation includes the main entrance door, which is set beneath a 14th-century moulded arch with a dripstone, along with two windows featuring wooden mullions and a transom. There are three modern dormers in the upper storey. The southern wing, also two stories, projects in three stages and contains one casement window on the ground floor and another upper window with rectangular leaded lights. The northern wing has two casement windows on the upper storey and a notable ground floor window with two lights, bold mouldings, and a moulded mullion that springs from a heavy projecting cill.
Inside, there is a 14th-century piscina with a moulded bowl in the hall, but no other medieval features are visible apart from the thickness of the walls. Historically, William Flore served as the Controller of the Works of the Castle from 1373 to 1380 and was Sheriff of Rutland. His son, Roger, was elected Speaker of the House of Commons four times.
