Description

These are four cottages, dating to circa 1700 and the 18th century, located on the east side of Water Lane in Ashwell. The cottages are constructed of rubble stone, with some stone dressings, and are topped by a buff tile roof that features a brick ridge and end stacks. The windows are casement style, arranged over one and a half and two storeys. A gabled cross wing projects to the right. The front of the cottages features a three-light casement window with a twin two-light dormer above it; a doorway; a three-light casement with a two-light dormer above; and another doorway with a single-light window above. A nine-pane window is visible on the inner return of the cross wing. A two-light stone-framed window with a hood mould is present on the front, above which is a similar three-light stone mullion window also with a hood mould. The cross wing extends to the rear. A 20th-century two-storey brick extension has been added to the right end. Inside, the cottages feature a chamfered beam.
