Description
The ruins of the Church of St John the Baptist, located on Racecourse Road in Nottingham, are a roofless structure dating from the 14th and 15th centuries, with the chancel and tower added in 1684. There were alterations made in the mid-19th century, and the site was consolidated in the late 20th century. The church is constructed of ashlar and coursed squared stone, and the windows are unglazed.
The chancel is a single bay with a string course and sill band, featuring round-arched windows on the east and south sides. The north chapel has round-arched windows on the north and west. The nave consists of two bays, supported by buttresses, and includes a plinth and string course. Each side of the nave has two Perpendicular windows with a doorway between them. The west tower is two stages high, with shallow angle buttresses, a plinth, string courses, and a crenellated parapet. It features a round-arched window on the west side and round-arched openings on each side of the bell stage.
Inside, the church retains a double chamfered chancel arch from the 14th century and a similar brick arch leading to the north chapel, along with a round arch to the tower. Monuments from the church have been removed to Newstead and Annesley.
