Description

Lady Bay Junior School is a school dating from 1899, possibly designed by M. O. Tarbotton. The building is constructed of Accrington and blue brick with ashlar and terra-cotta dressings and has a gabled Westmorland slate roof. A chamfered plinth and sill band are present, along with shouldered coped gables featuring kneelers. There are two ridge, two roof, and one side wall stack. The school is two storeys high and has a three-bay by six-bay layout. The windows are a mix of glazing bar sashes and casements.

The school comprises a bell tower, two parallel classroom ranges, and adjoining service buildings. The street front is dominated by a two-stage bell tower with string courses and four pairs of battered corner buttresses. Above the tower are four domed turrets, and above those again, a slated octagonal spire with a cupola featuring a leaded pagoda roof and a large dragon wind vane. A doorcase with a segmental pediment and mullioned overlight provides access. A paired casement is visible in the return angle to the left, and further casements are positioned above. To the left of the tower is a single-storey wing with three casements, while to the right are two gabled wings, the right wing stepped forward. The left wing has four-light mullioned and transomed sashes with a traceried semi-circular head, flanked by single transomed sashes with segmental heads; a central light sits above. The smaller wing to the right features a similar fenestration pattern with three central sashes. The playground side, to the west, has a central projecting double-gabled bay, containing a mullioned and transomed sash flanked by single sashes, with a single sash beyond. Above are arch-topped dormers with casements.

The rear elevation displays two gables, the right one projecting. To the left, a mullioned and transomed sash is flanked by single, smaller sashes. To the right, the fenestration is similar, with a triple central sash. The east front features a projecting gabled wing to the right. To the left is a railed cellar opening and three sashes; to the right is a raised, 20th-century projecting bay containing a metal casement, flanked by two small casements. A large sash window is incorporated into the wing to the right. Above and behind, a classroom range features a flat-roofed dormer to the left, and two large gabled dormers, each with two casements, to the right. The interior contains no notable architectural features.
