Description

Wilford Endowed School and the attached boundary wall are located on Main Road in Wilford. The primary school was founded and endowed as a charity school by Benjamin Carter, who served as rector from 1694 to 1732. The school building dates back to 1736, with alterations made and windows changed in the early 20th century. It features roughcast and colourwashed walls, a renewed plain tile roof, and coped gables with four gable stacks. The building has two storeys and three bays, with a double range plan. Most windows are wooden cross casements. The south front has three windows, and above the central window is an inscribed slate tablet that records the foundation and is signed by W Tilly. There are also two gabled through-eaves dormers, each containing a window. The rear of the building includes a central square porch from the mid-19th century, which has steps leading to a side door, a single window, and a parapet. Each side of the porch has a window on each floor, with the upper windows located in through-eaves dormers.

The classroom block, built in 1868, is attached at right angles to the school and runs parallel to the street. It is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings and has a slate roof adorned with a tile crest and four coped side wall stacks, designed in the Tudor Revival style. The block features a plinth and quoins, and is a single storey plus attics with three bays in an E-plan layout. The windows are primarily wooden framed cross casements with stone surrounds and mullions. The central gable is shaped and topped with a finial and a renewed clock, accompanied by a double window. The side bays contain an original window on the right and two 20th-century windows on the left, with two box dormers above. The end bays have gables with bargeboards and finials, with the right gable retaining an original window and the left featuring a flat-roofed addition.

Surrounding the property is a 19th-century brick boundary wall with brick coping and two pairs of square gate piers. The gate opposite the center of the wall is blocked.
