Description
The barn and stable range located to the north of Hempshill Hall Farmhouse is a threshing barn with an attached range of stables and outbuildings, dating from the mid-18th century to the early 19th century. It is constructed from brick and coursed rubble, featuring slate and pantile roofs. The threshing barn consists of four bays, with coped gables and kneelers. The west front has an off-centre threshing door, which is now boarded, flanked by two diamond breathers on the right and four on the left. The upper left breather is partly obscured by an inserted hayloft door with a plank door, and there is a small window below it.
To the north, there is a later single-storey outbuilding with a blank wall and a pantile roof with a plain tile verge, which has three windows in its north gable. To the south, the stable range is built of coursed rubble and features brick diamond breathers. It has two storeys, with the west front showcasing an off-centre stable door flanked by single breathers and small window openings. To the left, there is a broad plank door followed by a breather, and to the right, another small window opening. Above this, there are two breathers, with a hayloft opening with a plank door to the left and a small opening to the right.
On the east side, the stable range includes five stable doors, with the leftmost door situated beneath an external stone staircase leading to a plank door. To the right, there are three glazing bar casements with two lights, followed by a breather. The barn features an off-centre threshing door flanked by four breathers. Attached to the northeast is a single-storey stable and cartshed, which has a pair of central cart openings flanked by single windows, along with single doorways beyond.
