Description

The tomb of Captain John Deane, located 10 meters southeast of the Church of St Wilfrid, is a chest tomb with a railing, dating from 1761. It is signed by Charles, likely W. Charles from Wymeswold, Leicestershire. The tomb is made of red brick with an ashlar top and base, and it is enclosed by a wrought-iron railing featuring corner posts and finials. There is an inscribed slate tablet on the north side. Captain Deane served in the Russian navy until 1720, authored a history of the Russian fleet, held diplomatic positions in Flanders and Ostend, and was known to act as a British spy.
