Description
The Lenton War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was erected in 1919 by the residents of Lenton. It is made of a metal cross atop a column of Portland stone, with a stone base featuring bronze plaques on each face. The memorial is prominently located at the junction of Sherwin Road and Church Street, within a small circular garden, and serves as a focal point for the Albert Ball Memorial Homes, which were built behind it three years later. Together, the memorial, the Memorial Homes, and the surrounding boundary walls and railings create an elegant and evocative composition.
The memorial features a tall, fluted Ionic column made of Portland stone, which has a square plan and is set on a square pedestal. The pedestal has bronze plaques on each side and a cruciform base with two steps. At the top, there is a bronze cross with a sunburst carving.
The front plaque bears the inscription: "TO THE GLORIOUS AND UNDYING MEMORY OF THE/ MEN OF LENTON / WHOSE NAMES ARE HERETO AFFIXED WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES FOR/ THEIR COUNTY'S HONOUR AND FREEDOM IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918/ THIS MEMORIAL IS ERECTED BY THE INHABITANTS OF LENTON 1919/ (Names)." The names of 287 individuals are listed on plaques on the north and south faces of the plinth, while the plaque at the rear of the base explains the abbreviations used on the memorial.
Additionally, the boundary walls, railings, and gateways that surround the gardens and war memorial are separately listed at Grade II* as part of the listing for The Albert Ball Memorial Homes.
