Description

70 to 82 Derby Road is a row of shops, warehouses, and houses built in 1899 by G.S. Doughty of Nottingham for J. Wright & Son. The building has been altered in the mid-20th century and restored in the late 20th century. It is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings and features slate roofs with four coped stacks, two of which have been partly rebuilt. Designed in the Renaissance Revival style, it includes sill bands for each floor and a moulded eaves cornice.

The structure is three storeys high with attics and has a near-symmetrical front that consists of 19 windows across eight bays. The two central and end bays are topped with swept coped gables and finials. The ground floor retains many original openings with renewed shopfronts, divided by pilasters beneath a fascia cornice. Notably, No. 72 features an original wooden shopfront with a plate glass window, flanked on the left by a recessed glazed door that has shaped glazing bars and an overlight.

On the first floor, the central area has a single window flanked by triple windows with segment-arched central lights, rusticated surrounds, and keystones. There are two additional similar segment-arched windows beyond these, and to the right, a pair of similar windows. The end bays also have triple windows that match the central design. The second floor features similar flat-headed windows, mostly with double keystones. Above, the gables are shaped and include Diocletian windows with double keystones and voussoirs, along with three box dormers that have two-light windows and segmental pediments.
