Description
Steps Cave, located 10 meters southeast of Number 14A, is a man-made ornamental cave dating from around 1870, which was restored in the late 20th century. It was created for Alderman Thomas Herbert and is carved into a natural rock face. The cave features a round-arched doorway, which is flanked on the left by an unglazed round-arched opening. To the right of the doorway, there are regular rows of small niches cut into the rock face. The doorway leads into a round-arched tunnel that has a renewed brick staircase, providing access to an upper terrace. This cave, along with others in the vicinity, was originally a garden feature in the grounds of Herbert's house located in the Ropewalk. The buildings above the cave are not of special interest.
