Description
St Mary's House, now a hostel, was built in 1870 by T.C. Hine for his son G.T. Hine. The building features red brick construction with ashlar and blue brick dressings, topped by a hipped slate roof. It has two storeys and a symmetrical front with three by four bays. The windows are primarily plain sashes with brick segmental arches and ashlar springings. The entrance showcases a tripartite round-arched doorway with shafts, an original six-panel door, and a fanlight. Flanking the entrance are tripartite sash windows, and above, there is a small central window with tripartite windows on either side, all featuring deep sills on brackets. Each side of the building has a triangular bay window beneath a corbelled side wall stack. The left return includes a tripartite sash, a side door, and a set-back block with two additional windows. The exterior is complemented by a brick area wall topped with a traceried cast-iron railing and gate. G.T. Hine was in partnership with his father from 1867 to 1890 and served as Consulting Architect to Her Majesty's Commissioners in Lunacy.
