Description
The Warden's House at Hugh Stewart Hall, University of Nottingham, is a former country house built in 1804 by William Stretton for John Wright. It has been altered in the late 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of ashlar and features a lead and slate gambrel roof with five ridge stacks. Designed in the Gothick style, it includes a plinth and a crenellated parapet, along with slim octagonal corner turrets that have crenellated tops.
The house is two storeys tall and has a seven by five window arrangement. Most of the windows are original glazing bar sashes. The entrance front, facing north, has a three-bay center defined by the turrets. It features a central crenellated porch with corner turrets and a pointed arched doorway, along with a similar inner door flanked by lancet windows. To the left is a three-light mullioned window, and to the right is a sash window. Above, there are three sashes, with the central one reglazed. The side bays each have two sashes on both floors.
The garden front, facing south, also has a center defined by turrets, featuring a projecting central bay under a Renaissance Revival style coped gable with pinnacles, which contains a sundial. There is a Baroque style porch with angle buttresses, a segmental pediment, and an elongated keystone, leading to a glazed double door. Above this porch are two sashes, with additional single sashes beyond. The side bays also have two sashes each, and the left return has five sashes.
