Description

Daniel's Cave and Haddon Hall Stairs are man-made ornamental caves located approximately 30 meters southeast of Number 14A in Nottingham. They were created around 1856 for Alderman Thomas Herbert. Daniel's Cave measures about 10 meters by 6 meters and stands 3 meters high, with an opening at the west end. Inside, there is a central carved and ribbed dome featuring a skylight, supported by four columns. At the inner end of the cave, there is a sculpture group carved into the bedrock, depicting the legend of Daniel, which is approximately 3 meters high and 4 meters wide, featuring figures that are roughly life-sized.

Adjoining the cave is a rectangular passage about 20 meters long that leads to a staircase. This rock-cut staircase is approximately 9 meters long and is modeled after the staircase at Haddon Hall in Derbyshire. It includes columns, balustrades, and niches with figures. These caves, along with others in the vicinity, were designed as garden features within the grounds of Herbert's house in the Ropewalk, which is not included in this listing. The buildings that cover the caves are not of special interest.
