Man made ornamental caves. c1856. Made for Alderman Thomas Herbert. Daniel's cave, approx 10m x 6m and 3m high, open at the west end. Central carved and ribbed dome with skylight, on 4 columns. At the inner end, a sculpture group in bed rock, illustrating the legend of Daniel, approx 3m high and 4m wide, with approximately life size figures. On the north side, an adjoining rectangular passage, approx 20m long, leading to a staircase. The rock cut staircase, approx 9m long, is a copy of that at Haddon Hall, Derbys. The staircase has columns, balustrades and niches with figures. This cave and others nearby were built as garden features in the grounds of Herbert's house in the Ropewalk (not included).
