Description
The Elms is a house built in the late 18th century, with alterations and additions made in the late 19th century. It is constructed of red brick and features both slate and plain tile roofs, along with two gable stacks. The building has three storeys plus garrets and a three-window range.
On the ground floor, there is a single-storey full-width addition that includes a central gabled wooden porch, which is flanked by square bay windows. The probable original entrance is now blocked, and the windows are boarded. Above this, there is a narrow blocked window, flanked by single three-light casements, all with segment-headed tops. The upper level features similar windows with flat heads.
At the rear, there is a single-storey lean-to addition with a pantile roof. Above this, there are two two-light glazing bar casements. Further up, there is a central casement flanked on the right by a two-light glazing bar casement and on the left by a late 19th-century six-light casement, which may have replaced a weaver's window.
The main doorway, located to the southeast, has a gabled wooden latticed porch. Inside, the building retains original chamfered spine beams and staircases. The Elms was likely built as the Ostler's house for the nearby Basford Hall, which is not included in this listing.
