Description

This building began as a cinema, later adapted into an amusement arcade with refreshment rooms and offices, and incorporating rock-hewn underground caves. Its origins date back to the 13th century, with significant additions and alterations in 1910-12 and later 20th-century changes. The structure is built with steel framing and brick, faced with faience tiles. The symmetrical front elevation is four stories high, plus attics, and features a two-window range. The ground floor has an arcade with three Ionic marble columns and a fascia. A late 20th-century shopfront is present. Above the ground floor are two recessed, copper-clad bow windows with Ionic pilasters and a decorative frieze. Above these are two Diocletian windows featuring moulded arches, decorative keystones, and cherubs’ heads at the springing of the arches. The first and second floors are articulated with plaster strips, topped by an entablature. Further above are two canted bay windows with four lights, sidelights, and a curved, decorated frieze. Above these, two banded gables feature diamond openings.

The interior includes two early medieval, rock-hewn barrel-vaulted caves in the basement; one has a square moulded pier with capital, the other, a free-standing octagonal pier with a moulded base and capital. A rock-hewn circular well is also present. Behind the building lies the former auditorium of the Picture Palace Cinema, built in 1912 and subsequently floored. This retains a segment-arched, moulded plaster ceiling and a plaster relief of galleons above the proscenium arch. The cinema foyer on the first floor retains original panelling and a shallow plaster dome.
