Description
The building is a former cinema, now functioning as a social club, constructed between 1936 and 1937 by architect Reginald Cooper. It is made of red brick and reconstituted stone, which is painted, and the roofs are not visible behind a coped parapet.
The entrance front is two storeys high and features a cylindrical central projection with three renewed doors beneath a curving canopy. Above this, there is a projecting central fin flanked by steel-framed strip windows with ribbed heads, and three horizontal ribs. To the left, there is a rounded corner stair enclosure with a steel-framed first-floor window. The blank right return displays two prominent string courses.
Inside, the entrance hall retains much of its original character, featuring a coved ceiling with concealed lighting, a semicircular central paybox, and a square mushroom column. To the left, stairs lead to the balcony, and at the rear, there are two renewed double doors. The auditorium preserves most of its original features, including a square proscenium with a roll-moulded surround that projects forward. The flanking walls are convex curved with horizontal ribs and triple vertical striplights, and there are renewed double doors below. The auditorium ceiling has a convex cornice and a crosswise slotted ventilator towards the front, with a deep cove and a ribbed ventilator in front of these. The balcony features a coved ceiling with two ribbed ventilators, a moulded front, and a rounded projecting box to the right, along with a staircase to the left.
