Description
This is an early 19th-century terraced house, originally combined with a lacemaker’s workshop, located on Alfreton Road in Radford, Nottingham. The building is constructed of red brick with stucco dressings and a retiled roof, and includes a rendered basement. It has three storeys plus a basement, with a single bay. The ground floor features a moulded round-arched doorway on the left, containing a panelled door and fanlight. Beside the doorway is a sash window, partly reglazed, and above it, a similar sash. Both these windows are topped with reeded wedge lintels incorporating keystones. The second floor has a glazing bar casement window with seven lights, serving the workshop; a similar window is present at the rear. The interior reportedly contains reeded fireplace surrounds, and exposed beams and joists in the workshop. This building is a rare example of the domestic workshops that were built between approximately 1780 and 1840, to accommodate the hosiery and lace industries.
