Description

Skeffington House, part of the Newarke Houses Museum, dates from around 1600, with alterations made in the 19th century. The building features a three-gabled front that rises three storeys and has ten windows, all of which are stuccoed. The side wings were added in the 19th century and include crenellated parapets, small ball finials, and coping on the gables. The windows have been modified in a Gothic style with moulded labels and now consist of plain modern two-light wood mullion casements with leaded panes.

On the east side, there is a two-storey extension with splayed bays and a crenellated parapet. The building has two plain shallow doorcases with segmental arches and plain cornices, the central one featuring a stone ball, with modern doors. There are also modern rusticated gate piers, railings, and gates with an overthrow.

Inside, the house boasts extensive panelling and fireplaces, including a notable ground floor panelled room from the early 17th century. The fine principal staircase, built in the 18th century, has turned and fluted balusters, fluted column newels, a moulded handrail, and a panelled dado with fluted pilasters. This staircase is said to have been constructed for William Wright, who acquired the house in 1730. There is also a secondary dog leg staircase from the 17th century featuring heavy turned balusters and newels with ball finials, as well as a third staircase from the early 19th century with decorative iron balusters.

Skeffington House, along with the Iron Gates, Chantry House, and Newarke Wall, forms a group with other listed buildings in Castle Street, Castle Yard, and Castle View.
