Description

The Old Dolphin Public House is a public house located on Queen Street, dating from the late 16th century, with significant restoration in the early 20th century. It features a timber-framed and rendered structure with a clay tile roof, partly made of old tiles. The building is situated on a corner site and has an L-shaped plan. There is a passage on the right, which was formerly a public thoroughfare, leading to rooms and staircases. The front facing Queen Street has two bars, a lounge, and a small snug, with a central bar and a restaurant located upstairs.

The exterior includes a left gable that is at right angles to the street, with another gable on the return. The first storey has extensive half-timbering, although this is from an early 20th-century remodelling. The windows are casement types with 2, 3, and 4 lights, all dating from the 20th century.

Inside, the restaurant upstairs features large exposed beams from the 16th century. The snug and lounge have been remodelled in the early 20th century, including full-height panelling and a glazed screen separating the servery from the snug. Some of the wall seating is likely from the 19th century, and there are bell-pushes located in the bar on the street corner. The Old Dolphin is noted as Derby's oldest pub, with its license said to date back to 1580.
