Description
The conservatory in Markeaton Park is a late 18th century structure, possibly designed by Joseph Pickford of Derby for the Mundy family. It is constructed of brick with ashlar dressings and features plain tile roofs. The building is single storey and consists of 9 bays. The central pavilion has a large round-headed opening with double glazed doors, framed by a moulded ashlar arch, impost blocks, and a keystone, topped with a moulded ashlar pediment.
On either side of the central pavilion are lower 3-bay wings, each containing 3 round-headed openings with moulded ashlar arches, impost blocks, and keystones. The left wing features glazing bar sashes, while the right wing has been bricked up. Flanking these wings are taller square pavilions adorned with moulded ashlar cornices and brick parapets. Each pavilion includes a single ashlar Venetian window, complete with Doric pilasters, a moulded entablature, and a central keystone. This conservatory was built as an addition to Markeaton Hall, which was demolished in 1964.
