Description
Nos 1-5 Strand, built around 1883, is a Grade II listed building. It features ashlar stonework and stands three storeys tall. The continuous window range follows the curved angle as it returns into Wardwick. The sash windows are set within reveals and have semi-circular heads, voluted keyblocks, and baluster panels below. The second-storey windows are framed by moulded architraves with bracketed sills. Giant Corinthianesque pilasters are present in alternate bays, extending over the first and second storeys. The building has a plain frieze and a dentilled cornice with modillions, topped by open balustrading. The slate mansard roof includes a turret and iron brattishing. There is a modern entrance doorway leading to offices and modern shop fronts have been inserted. Nos 1-5 forms a group with Nos 6, 8, and 10, as well as the gates on the right-hand side of the Central Library and the statue of M.T. Bass in Wardwick.
