Description
The Market Hall, built in 1864, was designed by architect Thorburn and later altered by Thompson. It is located at the rear of the Guildhall in the Market Place. The building is constructed of red brick with stone dressings. It features semi-circular headed windows set in arched recesses, with the center slightly projecting and made of rusticated stone. Each side has a blind arch and an arched doorway at the center. The sides are topped with stone-coped brick parapets, and the center has a moulded cornice and an open balustrade. Inside, the Market Hall boasts an impressive iron and glass barrel-vaulted roof with a central lantern light. The Market Hall, along with No 33 Guildhall and Nos 35 and 36, forms a group.
