Description
Old Hall is a notable building dated 1648, featuring square-panelled timber framing with red brick nogging. It stands two storeys high with an attic and has three light 19th-century stone mullioned windows that include cast iron lattice lights, set above a stone plinth. The front of the building has a central two-storey porch that oversails on the upper floor, with splat balusters on the open sides. The bressummer above the porch is inscribed with "NISI DEUS FRUSTRA 1648," which reflects the sentiment from the psalm, "Unless the Lord build the house they labour in vain who build it." There are no windows to the left of the porch, while one window is present on each floor to the right. The roof is tiled, and the other elevations maintain a similar character. This interesting house was once known as The Cedars and is said to have been built by a Captain in Cromwell's army.
