Description
No. 45 Ropergate is a house that has been converted into a shop and offices. It likely dates from the early 18th century and was refronted in the early 19th century. The building is constructed of ashlar stone and has a slate roof. It stands two storeys high and features three slightly asymmetrical bays, with the central entrance bay positioned slightly to the right. There is a plinth at the base of the building.
The entrance consists of a double-leaf panelled door situated beneath a traceried fanlight. The doorcase includes panelled jambs, an archivolt on moulded imposts, and a moulded cornice supported by tall consoles. On either side of the entrance, there are sash windows with glazing bars set on a plain sill band. The first floor has three similar sash windows with projecting sills, and all windows are topped with plain flush lintels. The building is finished with a wide moulded cornice and has a stone-coped gable on the left side, along with a central brick ridge stack.
Inside, the vestibule features a part-glazed door with leaves beneath a fanlight, set in a pulvinated architrave with corner paterae. The similar architrave continues inside the front door, while the side doors match but lack fanlights. The rear hall is adorned with decorative encaustic floor tiles and includes a segmental-arched opening midway along the hall. The rear door has an architrave that matches those at the front, complete with a fanlight.
