Description

Number 49 is a house with attached railings, now used as offices. It dates from the late 18th century to early 19th century and has undergone later alterations. The building is constructed of painted brick with stone dressings and features a slate roof. The iron railings are also notable.

The house is two storeys high, with a basement and three bays, following a central hallway plan. It has an ashlar plinth and four stone steps leading to a central doorcase. The doorcase features an original iron boot-scraper on either side of the top step. The entrance includes a deeply-recessed double-leaf raised and fielded six-panel door, which is topped by a radial traceried overlight, all framed by a moulded architrave and a moulded cornice supported by fluted consoles.

On either side of the entrance, there are dwarf stone walls with original railings that have plain bars and standards with bulb bases and spear-head finials. The basement has a blocked opening on the right side. The ground floor includes plate-glass sash windows, with one on the right and two on the left. The second floor has a symmetrical arrangement of three sashes with glazing bars, along with a small inserted four-pane sash on the far right. All windows are topped with flat stone arches featuring incised voussoirs and projecting sills. There is a moulded hopper head connected to a bracketed downpipe on the far right, and a bracketed stone cornice above. The left gable has concrete coping, and there are brick end stacks located halfway down the front pitch of the roof.
