Description
No. 23 Market Place is a house that has been converted into a shop and offices. It dates from the early to mid-18th century and has undergone some alterations in the 20th century. The building is constructed of painted brick with stone dressings and features a slate roof.
It stands three storeys high and has three bays, with the bay on the right being significantly wider than the others. The ground floor has a 20th-century shop front, which is flanked by rusticated stone pilaster strips at the corners and two similar strips between the bays on the first and second floors.
On the first floor, there are three 20th-century replacement flush-frame 18-pane sash windows set in the original openings. The second floor also features similar sash windows with glazing bars. All the sash windows are positioned beneath segmental brick arches that have raised double keystones and are supported by moulded stone sills. The building has a moulded gutter and a steeply-pitched roof with swept eaves, topped by an end brick stack on the right.
