Description

Nos 37 and 39 Market Place is an emporium, now a shop, built in 1894 for England's furnishing and ironmongers' store. It is constructed from beige terracotta made by the Leeds Fireclay Company and originally faced a cast-iron framed building, which has since been replaced by a late 20th-century structure. The building has a Welsh slate roof and stands three storeys tall, with a façade divided into four bays.

The third bay serves as the shop entrance, featuring a round-arched portal on the ground floor and a projecting canted bay on the upper floors. The ground floor is flanked by 20th-century plate-glass shop windows, while the first floor has basket-arched windows and the second floor features 2-light windows. Above the windows is a frieze divided into panels, with capitals that resemble pilasters, and the panels are inscribed with the words "ENGLAND," "COMPLETE," "HOUSE," and "FURNISHER," except for the area above the canted bay, which is decorated with scrolled foliage.

The building is topped with a rich cornice that has an egg-and-dart motif, and a panelled parapet with pierced panels, ball and urn finials, and a central dormer with a Dutch gable. The narrow left-hand bay includes an arched through-passage entrance, with transomed windows on each upper floor and a cornice below a cusped parapet.
