Description

Old Hall Cottages, now three dwellings, are a late 16th-century farm building, with alterations made in the late 18th century and the mid-20th century. The building is constructed of well-coursed gritstone, with a stone slate roof. It has two storeys and five first-floor windows. A cart-entry, now a doorway, is positioned slightly off-centre and has a large segmental-arched lintel above it. To either side of this doorway are inserted doorways and windows, each with monolithic lintels and sills. A continuous dripcourse runs along the front. The first floor features two-centred pointed-arched windows with altered glazing. The gables are coped with kneelers and finials at the apexes, and there is a single ridge stack. The rear of the building has an original Tudor-arched doorway, two inserted doorways, and five windows, with four pointed-arched windows on the first floor. A right-hand return features an original, three-light, double-chamfered mullioned window to the first floor, complete with a hoodmould. Between 1791 and 1821, the upper storey was used as a schoolroom by nuns.
