Description
The Mason monument, located approximately 1 metre south of the fourth bay of the south aisle of the Church of St. Mary, is an early 18th-century monumental slab commemorating Mary, the wife of John Mason of Upton, who died in 1723. Made of sandstone, the slab features a grooved margin and a semicircular band of scallops around the head, with winged angel heads in the spandrels. The inscription notes that Mary was aged 29 at her death. The monument also includes additions for Martha, the second wife of John Mason, who died in 1749 at the age of 39, and for John Mason himself, who died in 1763 at the age of 78. The slab has a crack and has been repaired with iron side plates.
