Description
Elm Leys Farmhouse is an early to mid-18th century farmhouse, altered and extended in later years. Constructed of coursed squared sandstone with a stone slate roof, the building has a roughly L-shaped plan. It’s composed of a two-unit front range and a rear wing extending to the left.
The symmetrical east front has two storeys and three bays. It features a central doorway with a plain surround and overlight. Ground floor windows are 16-pane boxed sashes, while those above are three 2-light casements. Gable chimneys are built of brick. The left gable wall includes an inserted ground floor window, a blocked narrow window above it, and a smaller, partially broken attic window which accommodates an inserted chimney.
The rear wing, with a south-facing outshut, has windows on the gable wall across four levels. These windows are mostly fitted with flush mullions; two are 2-light at ground floor, a larger 2-light stair window is above and to the left, a square window at the first floor has been altered into a horizontal-sliding sash, and a 2-light window sits in the attic.
A lower, two-storey, one-bay addition is located at the north end of the main range. This addition features a doorway near the junction and a 2-light casement window on each floor.
Inside, the original house-body is in the second bay, featuring a deep chimney stack (with an altered fireplace) – the kitchen has been moved into the addition – and a parlour in the first bay. A dog-legged staircase is present, and cellar steps are visible. The farmhouse was derelict at the time of survey in 1987.
