Description

1 Santingley Lane is a house that now operates as a public house. It dates from around 1700, with a slightly later rear wing that was raised in the mid-19th century. The building is constructed of large, coursed, much-weathered sandstone, with brick used for the first floor of the rear wing, and it has a stone slate roof.

The house has two storeys and features three first-floor windows. Originally, it had a three-cell plan with a direct entry into the third cell, which is now blocked. This entry has been replaced by an inserted doorway in the second cell, which features a reused lintel that is initialled and dated "SHE, thin tie-stone 1669," with chamfered surrounds. On either side of this doorway are four-light double-chamfered mullioned windows, which have almost square reveals. Two of the mullions have been removed, leaving only the king mullion, with a drip course above. The first floor is fitted with sash windows that have slightly projecting sills, and there are brick gable stacks.

At the rear, the left wing breaks forward and shows an earlier single-storey roofline in the gable. There are plain sash windows on each floor of the returns. The house has a lateral stack at the junction of the second and third cells, while the right-hand return features a large external stack with offsets, capped by a brick gable stack to the right of two-light windows on each floor.
