Description

This barn, likely originally a granary, dates to the 16th century or earlier and has been altered subsequently. It is located approximately 2 metres south of the rear wing of Hanson House Farmhouse. The building is constructed of coursed squared sandstone with a stone slate roof, and incorporates some internal timber framing. The rectangular plan is oriented north-south, with three bays. The west side features a 4-centred arched wagon doorway in the third bay, now fitted with a modern sliding door and having a chamfered surround. To the left and above is a former granary doorway which has been altered to create a window. A doorway with a large lintel is present at the left end, with an inserted window above. A chimney is situated on the roof slope near the left end, and the stone gable copings have kneelers. The east side is concealed by modern additions. Inside, there are two king-post roof trusses with cambered tie beams and longitudinal bracing to the ridge. The truss nearer the south end has been closed with close-studding, while the other has been infilled with brick. The north gable wall was originally designed as a dovecote, featuring tiered nest holes and ledges.
