Description

Nos 18 and 20 on Twitch Hill are two dwellings that originally functioned as a single house, dating from the 17th century and altered, likely in the early 19th century. The left wing was probably rebuilt in the early 19th century, while the rear part was constructed later in the 19th century. The building is made of coursed squared rubble with some quoins, and the rear wing is brick. It features stone slate roofs and has an H-plan layout with an extended rear-left wing. The house is two storeys tall with a nearly symmetrical facade of six bays. The central section has paired entrances surrounded by architraves. All windows are 12-pane sashes, with the left wing's windows being larger and lacking stone surrounds. The gable copings are a later addition. The rear of the building is rendered but retains two lights from a three-light double-chamfered window at the first-floor level. The rear wing is not considered of special interest.

Inside, the right wing contains a late 17th-century staircase with turned balusters, incised newels with moulded caps, and a moulded handrail, which may have been reset in the 19th century. The front room of the right wing features panelling, possibly reused, and a moulded fireplace with a Tudor arch and sunken spandrels. The roofs of the hall and right wing have king-post trusses with raking queen struts and braces extending from the king-posts to the ridge.
