Description

Castleford Bridge is a public road bridge over the River Calder, dated on the parapets to 1805, designed by Bernard Hartley and built in 1808 by Jesse Hartley. It is constructed of sandstone ashlar in a classical style. The bridge features three segmental arches with rusticated voussoirs, scrolled keystones on the east side, and vermiculated keystones on the west side. It has a guilloche frieze and plain parapets with rounded coping, which include lettered panels in the center stating "BERNARD HARTLEY (west side) ARCHITECT 1805" and "JESSE HARTLEY (east side) BUILDER 1808." The bridge is supported by triangular cutwaters and canted piers, all finished with a concave sweep to the parapet and banded rustication. The rectangular terminal piers are made of similar masonry and have blind window panels with splayed voussoirs, modillioned cornices, and panelled parapets. There is a ramped approach at the north end, and drum terminals at both ends.
