Description
The public urinal located to the east of the Post Office in Glass Houghton is a notable structure, likely built in the late 19th century or early 20th century. It is a Macfarlane's Patent urinal, manufactured by the Saracen Foundry in Glasgow, as indicated by the lettering on the west end. The urinal is made of cast iron and features ceramic furnishings.
The design is rectangular with curved rear corners and has an open top. It consists of decorated plates arranged in vertical panels within a slender tubular frame. There are open entrances at each end, with four panels between these entrances and returned ends that create internal screens. Each panel is adorned with raised and pierced geometrical patterns, while the top features a two-tiered grill. Inside, there are four stalls, which appear to be original to the structure.
