Description
This building is a barn with an added workshop or cottage, located approximately 5 metres north of Woodbottom Cottage at Low Hall Farm. It dates from the late 17th century, with an early 19th-century addition. The structure is made of coursed gritstone with ashlar dressings and features a stone slate roof with ashlar coped gables and kneelers, along with a single gable stack.
The exterior of the barn includes a tall five-bay design with quoins. The south front has an off-centre cart entrance with chamfered jambs, though the stone lintel is missing and replaced by a wooden lintel. To the left, there is a small window with a Tudor-arched head, and beyond that, a slightly projecting doorway also with a Tudor-arched head and chamfered jambs. To the right, there is a single doorway that was enlarged in the 19th century, with a pitching hole above that has a flat head. Set back to the right is the added cottage or workshop.
The west gable front has a blocked hayloft doorway at the upper level. On the north front, there is a single Tudor-arched doorway in a chamfered surround to the right, and to the left, a doorway with a plain lintel above which is a single rectangular breather. The cottage has a single window on each floor, with the upper window featuring a two-light sliding sash.
Inside, the barn has king post roof trusses with side angle struts and purlins. This barn was originally part of the farm buildings associated with Low Hall, the home of the Green family, who were the lords of the manor of Horsforth.
